Moonfleet accepts referrals from fellow practitioners for the treatment of periodontal disease. Patients referred for periodontal disease are treated solely for this and see their general dentist for all other dental treatment.
What is periodontal disease?
It is a disease of the gums and supporting structures of the teeth. It starts as gingivitis which is an inflammation of the gums where they become red, swollen and bleed easily when brushed. Most of the population suffer from this some or all of the time but a proportion will go on to develop periodontal disease proper. Periodontal disease is diagnosed when the bony support tissues start to be destroyed, by this we mean the bone that holds the teeth in the jaws. This can be a slow process which may accelerate from time to time. The disease progresses painlessly until the tooth becomes loose or an abscess starts to develop. More teeth are lost to periodontal disease in adults than to decay.
How do I know if I have got it?
It is important to get checked out by a dentist who can tell you if you have it and how far advanced it is.
Periodontal Services at Moonfleet
John is ably assisted by his hygienists Lisa and Cheryl. John is trained as a periodontist and has a Masters degree in the subject of periodontology.
The aim of treatment is to stop the progression of the disease, to regain some of the lost tooth attachment and to firm up the teeth and prevent their loss. Typically this will involve examination and treatment planning, detailed assessment of oral hygiene needs and deep cleaning of periodontal pockets. Reassessment of the disease status following this initial phase of treatment will result in further localised treatment and maybe surgery.
If you are coming to Moonfleet for your general dentistry you will automatically be advised of your needs. If you have another dentist and are concerned that you might have periodontal disease, ask your dentist to refer you.
